Keeping Our Children & Young People Safe

Keeping Our Children & Young People Safe
Recent high profile cases have brought the issues of harassment, bullying and sexual assault into the public eye again and this is a good opportunity to look at how the Church now has safeguarding procedures in place.

The National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church in Ireland is the body charged with giving advice and support on all aspects of safety and protection of children and young people in the Catholic Church in Ireland today. They are responsible for policy and procedures in the area of safeguarding and they monitor safeguarding practice in each diocese. The diocese of Kildare and Leighlin follows the code of practice laid out by the National Board and the Diocesan Safeguarding Committee looks after ongoing training and support for parishes.

We are very fortunate to have many children and young people interested in Church activities such as children’s choirs, altar servers, faith friends, JPII Awards, Amadeus Youth Group to name a few. Children /young people under the age of 18 are required to have a signed parental consent form for these activities and a record is kept of their attendance at these events. All group leaders are Garda vetted and there is always appropriate supervision for such activities. Records and personal data are stored securely and confidentially. We can now say that the Church is one of the safest places for children and young people to be involved.

We want children and young people to get involved; we want them to enjoy their church-related activities and to be safe while doing so. We take very seriously our responsibility for safeguarding children and young people as well as the adults involved in working with them.
